12/20/02 Girls hoops showdowns

First place is on the line in two Monroe County girls’ basketball matchups tonight.

Fairport (4-0 league, 6-0 overall) visits surprising Penfield (4-0, 5-0) in Division I and Division III rivals Pittsford Mendon (3-0, 5-2) and Pittsford Sutherland (4-0, 5-1) play at Sutherland.

Sutherland will be without standout guard Ashley Cerniglia, who has been sidelined since Dec. 5 with an ankle sprain. She was averaging 22 points. Coach Dan Judd said the Knights hope to have Cerniglia back in time for a showdown with Fairport in next Friday’s first round of the Livonia Tournament. Sutherland’s only loss was to Gates Chili on the day after Cerniglia was injured in practice.
