(February 12, 2003) — PERINTON — Both coaches were smiling after the game, but
only the Greece Athena players were cheering.
Lyndsey Gallina scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Trojans to
a 55-49 victory over Fairport in the Group 1 final of the Monroe County
Tournament at Fairport.
“Every time we come to Fairport we always lose by one or two,” Gallina said. “We
just wanted to win this game so bad, and we had nothing to lose.”
Fairport had a perfect season to lose, but maybe it has more to gain with the
loss.
“I think it’s going to be a good motivator for us,” said Fairport coach Kermit
Moyer. “I think the motivation and the energy level heading into sectionals will
be really high.”
Fairport led 34-28 with three minutes left in the third quarter when Gallina
took over. She scored 13 points in the next seven minutes as Athena went on an
18-5 run.
“She’s been money for us all year,” said Athena coach Mike Butler. “She stepped
up big in a big game, no doubt about that.”
With Fairport falling to 19-1, there are no undefeated girls basketball teams
left in Section V. There is still a top target, however.
“I still think they’re the team to beat,” Butler said of Fairport. “We know if
we want to win sectionals, we have some good teams we have to get through.”
Katie Pauly scored 14 points and Corrine Keller added 11 for Athena, which
improved to 17-3.
Sabrina Boykin led Fairport with 17 points. Lindsay Ellis added 13 points and 13
rebounds for the Red Raiders.
