02/14/03 Livonia's Downey dies at 50

(February 14, 2003) — LIVONIA — Tom Downey, who coached the Livonia boys
basketball team to 10 Livingston County championships and four Section V
titles in 18 seasons, died Thursday night. He was 50. |

Mr. Downey, a nine-time Section V Coach of the
Year, had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his stomach on Nov. 19 and
returned to the Bulldogs’ bench earlier this season.
A 1970 graduate of Dansville High School, Mr. Downey was one of the most
respected coaches in Section V and also won five other league titles at Canisteo
and Dansville. He also coached the Genesee Community College men’s basketball
team in 1982 and ‘83.
“He was a complete asset to our community,” said Richard C. Wesley of Livonia, a
State Court of Appeals judge and longtime friend of Mr. Downey’s. “He made
Livonia a better place to live. There are a lot of sad people in Livonia
tonight.”
Mr. Downey is survived by his wife, Linda, and three children, Christa, Kevin
and Kyle.

Downey funeral set for Monday:
Calling hours and funeral arrangements have been set for Tom Downey, the Livonia
teacher and basketball coach who died Thursday night.
The calling hours will be Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7
to 9 p.m. at the Livonia High School gymnasium. The funeral service will be held
Monday morning at 10:30, also at the gymnasium.
Directions from Rochester and points north: Take Route 390 south to Exit
9; take Route 15 south into Lakeville; turn left on Route 20A into the village
of Livonia; take a right at Commercial Street/Route 15; high school will be on
the left just outside the village.
