Mr. Downey, a nine-time Section V Coach of the Year, had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his stomach on Nov. 19 and returned to the Bulldogs’ bench earlier this season.

A 1970 graduate of Dansville High School, Mr. Downey was one of the most respected coaches in Section V and also won five other league titles at Canisteo and Dansville. He also coached the Genesee Community College men’s basketball team in 1982 and ‘83.

“He was a complete asset to our community,” said Richard C. Wesley of Livonia, a State Court of Appeals judge and longtime friend of Mr. Downey’s. “He made Livonia a better place to live. There are a lot of sad people in Livonia tonight.”

Mr. Downey is survived by his wife, Linda, and three children, Christa, Kevin and Kyle.
