02/15/03 Hoops award named after Livonia coach

(February 21, 2003) — Nine boys basketball coaches in Section V are presented awards at an annual banquet based on a vote among their peers, game officials and members of the media.

Beginning this year, those Birkett Mills Coach of the Year awards will be renamed in honor of former Livonia coach Tom Downey, who died from stomach cancer Feb. 13.

Downey was a nine-time coach of the year in Section V. His teams won four sectional championships.
