03/03/03 Athena Girls AA Champions

by Mike Hedeen photo by Bob Gosney Second seed Greece Athena raced out to a 28-12 first half lead, then held off a second half rally by top seeded Fairport to win the Section V Class AA Girls Basketball Championship 40-38. The Trojans had everything going their way in the first 16 minutes while the Red Raiders could do nothing right. However the second half was a different story. Fairport outscored Athena 18-5 in the third quarter and cut the lead to one in the fourth, but never took the lead. Corrine Keller led the Trojans and all scorers with 14 points earning MVP honors. They meet Class A Champion Hilton for a state tournament berth.
