HS boys basketball: Fairport stifles rally by Athena

(December 31, 2004) — The Fairport boys basketball team will enter the new
year undefeated after escaping with a 66-61 victory over Greece Athena in the
championship of the Fairport Holiday Tournament on Thursday.
The Red Raiders led for most of the game, but the Trojans rallied in the
fourth quarter and trailed 64-61 in the final minute. Athena, which outscored
Fairport 18-11 in the final quarter, missed a tying 3-pointer with 20 seconds
remaining.
Corey McAdam made two free throws with 16 seconds left to seal it for Fairport
(6-0).
Matt DiPerna, who finished with eight points, hit two 3-pointers in the third
quarter as Fairport took a 55-43 lead.
"We got on a good run there in the third quarter," Fairport coach Scott Fitch
said.
Fairport will have a tough schedule next week as it plays Gates Chili on
Wednesday and at Rush-Henrietta next Friday.
Cory Magee scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds to earn MVP honors for
Fairport.
Nick Mueller scored 13 points to lead Athena (6-3).
