Fairport beats East in MLK Classic
Staff report
(January 16, 2006) — Cory Magee's tip-in with 29 seconds left gave Fairport
High a thrilling 56-55 victory over East High in the Martin Luther King
basketball classic at the Blue Cross Arena.
Magee, a 6-8 forward headed to Canisius next fall, dominated the fourth
quarter and finished with 20 points for the Red Raiders (9-1).
Senior guard Corey McAdam added 16 points for Fairport, whose only loss this
season was to Section VI powerhouse Niagara Falls.
Keion Mitchem led East High (10-3) with 18 points but the high-scoring senior
was held in check most of the afternoon by Fairport's man-to-man defense.
Fairport trailed the entire game until sophomore Kyle Downey hit a 3-pointer
with 2:25 left to give the Red Raiders a 52-50 lead.
Patrick Douglas had a steal and layup to tie the game for East before Mark
Bruce hit a pair of free throws to put Fairport ahead by 54-52.
Mitchem's old-fashioned three-point play after a steal and foul gave East a
55-54 lead before Magee's heroics.
East had a final chance after a Fairport turnover but the Red Raiders stole
the ball in the final seconds.
In earlier games, Marshall beat Brockport 62-55 and Newark beat Franklin
60-49.
