High school sideline report

State rankings available online

(January 20, 2006) Until recently, the New York State Sportswriters Association rankings were available only via newsletter. Now they're online: . They're compiled by a network of writers throughout the state.

Section V has only two No. 1 teams in the most recent (Jan. 15) rankings and both are in girls basketball: Nazareth (Class B) and unbeaten Elba (D), which answered a big test Jan. 9 by beating Genesee Region rival and No. 4 Batavia Notre Dame, 53-40. Two other girls basketball squads, Honeoye Falls-Lima (A) and Honeoye (C), are ranked No. 2. The top-ranked area teams in other sports:

Hockey: No. 3 Irondequoit, just ahead of No. 4 Greece Athena/Odyssey.

Wrestling: No. 4 Wayne, just ahead of No. 5 Spencerport (large schools); No. 12 Holley (small).

Boys basketball: No. 2 East Rochester (C) among small schools, but the Bombers will tumble a few spots after Tuesday's loss to Lyons.

The top large-school area teams are No. 7 Fairport (AA), No. 13 Batavia (A) and No. 5 Palmyra-Macedon (B).

ACL clinic Sunday

Avon is hosting a forum on ACL injuries in female athletes on Sunday that is open to students, coaches and parents. There are two sessions, one for coaches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and another for parents and students, 1:30-3 p.m.

Hoops shootout

McQuaid has put together its lineup for the third annual Image Capital Shootout.

Eight teams are state-ranked heading into the lineup of five boys basketball games Jan. 29 at Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial:

# Class D No. 8 Finney (11-1) vs. Greece Odyssey (4-6), 10 a.m.

# Class B No. 1 Lackawanna (11-0) vs. No. 5 Palmyra-Macedon (10-2), noon

# Class AA No. 14 East (10-3) vs. No. 11 Jamestown (12-0), 2 p.m.

# Class AA No. 7 Fairport (10-1) vs. McQuaid (5-7 ), 4 p.m.

# Class AA No. 25 Syracuse Henninger (11-2) vs. No. 4 Niagara Falls (10-2), 6 p.m.

Tickets ($5) can be bought at the arena or
