UMass advanced to the league championship
tournament for the first time since 2002 when the Minutemen fell to George
Washington in the semifinal round. This year's qualification was the ninth
time in
r 15 seasons that UMass has made postseason play.
Cook was also named to the Atlantic 10
All-Conference Second Team at the conclusion of the regular season. The
6-foot-5 defender started every game this season and ranked second on the team
in points (11) and was tied for first in goals (5). Both of those totals were
career-highs for Cook who also had two game-winning scores to his credit this
season.
Only two defenders were named to the
All-Tournament Team - Cook and Dayton goalkeeper Nick Tarkany. Five
midfielders and four forwards comprised the remainder of the squad.
In all, 17 UMass players have been named to
the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team since the Minutemen's first appearance in
1991 - Koch's first season in Amherst.
Of those 17 players, Cook is the eighth
defensive player selected. J.R. Pouncey, now the assistant women's soccer
coach at Pace University, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2001
Tournament. Joining Pouncey on that team was goalkeeper Bryan O'Quinn, now
with the Western Mass Pioneers, and Deren, UMass' all-time leading scorer.
The Minutemen lost their opening round game 2-0 to
eventual Atlantic 10 Champion Rhode Island who now advances to the NCAA
