Tompkins Trust CEO Garner dies

Fairport native Stephen Garner, who began his banking career at Lincoln First
Bank of Rochester and for the last three years was president and CEO of
Tompkins Trust Co. in Ithaca, died Saturday of an apparent heart attack. He
was 60.
James Byrnes, chairman and CEO of Tompkins
Trustco Inc. and chairman of Tompkins Trust, has been appointed to the
additional responsibility of CEO of the trust. Tompkins Trustco is a financial
holding company for Tompkins Trust, the Bank of Castile, Mahopac National
Bank, Tompkins Insurance Agencies Inc. and AM&M Financial Services Inc.
Mr. Garner in 1982 became president of
Lincoln First’s NBW division in Westchester County. In 1984, he became the
regional executive of Chase Manhattan Bank’s Northern Metropolitan Region in
Westchester County. Four years later, he was named executive vice president
and chief operating officer of the Hudson Valley National Bank. He became
president and CEO of Mahopac National Bank in 1994.
Mr. Garner graduated from Fairport High
School, where he was an all-Monroe County basketball player (1964),
and from the College of Wooster in Ohio with a bachelor of arts degree in
biology.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, whom he
met in high school, and three children: Chapin, Trevor and Kara.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday
at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Ithaca. Donations can be sent to
