Wilson 60, Fairport 56
Marcus Holmes finished with 22 points to lead
Wilson to their tenth straight win, 60-56 over Fairport in a non-league boys
basketball game Saturday at Fairport.
“We led by as much as 15 points in the third
quarter, but Fairport certainly showed they were a great team, as they came
back to within one with a minute and a half to go,” said Wilson coach Chris
Connell.
Kevin Downey finished with 29 points for the
Red Raiders (11-3), including 11 in the fourth quarter.
“Downey certainly hurt us, but we were able to stop the other two guards, and
we knew we’d have to play that type of defense to beat them,” Connell said.
Wilson (12-3) forced 15 Red Raider turnovers
using a 2-3 zone defense and press throughout the game.
“The kids responded well under pressure. We
had the lead pretty much the entire game and ran our offense as we intended
to,” said Connell.
Carlton Smith made two free throws and Holmes
hit three in the last minute to seal the win for Wilson.
Fairport had the ball down two with less than a minute to play but turned the
ball over with 15 seconds left. Wilson came back down court and Holmes made a
layup with eight seconds left to put the game out of reach.
The win avenged a 77-70 Fairport win at
Wilson on Dec. 5.
