March 4, 2007 12:18 am — Kyle Downey might be the more recognizable of
Fairport's 3-point shooters, but Kevin Borden's making a name for himself as a
sharp-shooter.
Borden hit the last of his four "3's" with 1:30 remaining to snap a 53-all tie
and propel the Red Raiders to their second straight Class AAA sectional
basketball championship, a 64-54 win over rival Rush-Henrietta on Saturday at
the Blue Cross Arena at the Community War Memorial.
"I was just wide-open, my teammates got me the ball and I just put a good
stroke on it and it went in," said Borden, who finished with a team-high 20
points. "It feels great. There's no better feeling."
Downey earned Tournament MVP honors with 14 points and seven assists and Brian
Genhardt added 11 as second-seeded Fairport (19-3) split the four-game season
series with R-H (20-3).
"We knew the game-plan a lot because we've already played them three times so
we just had to battle. ... We were just able to hit more shots," Downey said.
"We have bragging rights over them in the class and the area."
Dane Miller scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Dezerick Brooks had
eight rebounds for the Royal Comets.
