Fairport's Downey named AGR Player of the Year

(March 29, 2007) — Fairport’s Kyle Downey should have known big things were ahead for him during the high school basketball season when he grew three inches after his sophomore year.

A taller and stronger Downey scored 23 points a game in an expanded role for Fairport this past winter, and led the Red Raiders to the Class AA boys state tournament semifinals.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior shooting guard, largely a spot-up shooter as a sophomore, is the 2006-07 All-Greater Rochester Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Meet all of the Super 15 in Friday’s editions of the Democrat and Chronicle, including Downey, who also helped Fairport repeat as Section V Class AAA champions under AGR Coach of the Year Scott Fitch.

Kevin Downey, Kyle’s older brother, was the 2001 co-AGR Player of the Year as a senior guard at Livonia.
