High school basketball players of the year

(April 17, 2007) — Boys
City-Catholic
Bobby Bell, East. The junior guard powered the Orientals to a 16-6 record,
averaging 18.9 points, 5.1 assists and 5.1 rebounds. Bell had a banner game
against McQuaid Jesuit High scoring 36 points against the Knights and
connected on nine 3-point baskets. He was also named to this year's All
Greater Rochester team. Zedrick Wilson, Franklin. The junior guard/forward led
the Quakers to an 18-5 record. He averaged 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Monroe County I
Kyle Downey, Fairport. The junior guard led the Red Raiders to the Section V
Class AAA championship and a share of the Monroe County Division I title.
Downey averaged 22 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
Dane Miller, Rush-Henrietta. The sophomore forward led the Royal Comets to a
20-3 record. He averaged 16 points, 18 rebounds, and six assists.
Monroe County II
Brian Benson, Greece Athena. The junior center/forward led the Trojans this
season in both points per game (15) and rebounds (10). He was the MVP of the
Greece Tip-off Tourney and helped the Trojans to the second consecutive
Section V Class AA championship.
Monroe County III
Joe Reed, Brighton. The senior averaged 17.9 points per game and ranked among
the top five players in Monroe County. The Barons leading scorer, he also
averaged 5.5 rebounds and 5 blocked shots per game.
Livingston County I
Bryan Canty, Hornell. The senior point guard averaged 15 points as the Red
Raiders compiled a 14-7 record. He is being recruited by Canisius, St. John
Fisher and RIT.
Livingston County II
Gary Kwiecien, Perry. The senior point guard averaged 15.9 points, 4.7 assists
and 3.4 steals as the Yellow Jackets compiled a 14-7 record. He is being
recruited by both Alfred and Keuka Colleges.
Finger Lakes East
Chris Milke, Palmyra-Macedon. The senior center played four years on the Red
Raiders varsity. Last season he averaged 17 points, 22 rebounds, 16 blocked
shots, and 10 assists. He is being pursued by several Division III colleges
and has been offered a scholarship at Lock Haven.
Finger Lakes West
Ben Garman, Red Jacket. The senior guard led the Indians to a 17-7 record. He
averaged 12 points, five rebounds and plans to enroll at Monroe Community
College.
Genesee Region
Derek Wolfley, Attica. The junior forward led Attica High to the
co-championship of the Division I Genesee Region. He averaged 21.1 points per
game along with 13.8 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and four 3-point baskets.
Wayne County
Jon Brooks, Marion. The senior guard was Wayne County's Player of the Year in
2006 and 2007. Brooks averaged 16 points, 7.6 assists and 2.5 steals and led
the Black Knights in scoring, assists, steals, and shooting percentage.
Allegany County
Dan Heisey, Whitesville. The senior guard averaged 25.1 points for a total of
578 points. He also averaged 7.5 rebounds and totaled 171 rebounds on the
year.
Independent
Andy Marchand, Finney. The senior point guard led his team to a 24-3 record,
winning both the Section V Class DD title and the state title and was selected
as the MVP of both the Section V and the state tournaments. Marchand scored a
career high of 1,728 points, including 243 3-point baskets and 737 assists.
Steuben County
Will Cornett, Campbell-Savona. The senior guard led the Panthers to a 24-1
record, averaging 7 rebounds, 5.5 assists, four steals, and 10.8 points.
Patrick Wright, Prattsburg. The senior center guided the Vikings to a 19-3
record. Wright led the team with 310 points, pulled down 202 rebounds and shot
71 percent from the free-throw line.
Girls
Monroe County I
Shenise Johnson, Rush-Henrietta The junior forward averaged 24 points and 17
rebounds, leading Rush-Henrietta to the State Class AA NYSPHSAA championship.
She has already been contacted by numerous Division I women's basketball
programs including Connecticut, LSU, Boston College and Syracuse.
Monroe County II
Megan Shoniker, Greece Arcadia and Jori Davis, Greece Athena. Shoniker, a
senior guard, averaged 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists a game this
season. She will attend Rhode Island in the fall.
Davis, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, averaged 22 points, nine rebounds and five
assists a game this year, moving past 1,200 points for her career. She will
attend Indiana in the fall.
Monroe County III
Jackie Ward, Pittsford Mendon. The senior guard has been a perennial Player of
the Year since she was a freshman. Last season she averaged 12 points, 6
rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals a game. She will play for Binghamton in the
fall.
Private-Parochial I
Betsy Jacobson, Mercy. The senior center averaged 22 points and 11.3 rebounds.
She scored more than 1,400 points in her career despite missing most of her
junior season with a knee injury. She will attend Brown.
Private-Parochial II
Serena Moore, Bishop Kearney. The senior forward averaged 21 points and 13.5
rebounds as she led Kearney into the Section V Class CCC finals against
Marion. She will attend Siena.
Rochester League
Emma Cannon, School of the Arts. The senior forward/center averaged 20 points,
14 rebounds and three blocks a game. She will attend Central Florida with
teammate Marshay White in the fall.
Finger Lakes East
Alyssa Fenyn, Newark The sophomore guard averaged 20.3 points, 10.3 rebounds,
5 assists and 3.6 steals a game and was named Most Valuable Player in leading
Newark to the Section V Class A Championship. She has scored more than 1,000
points and is being recruited by several Division I colleges.
Finger Lakes West
Brittany White, Bloomfield. The junior guard averaged 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5
assists and 4 steals a game. She led Bloomfield to the Section V and Far West
Region Class C titles.
Genesee Region
Marci Jonathan, Elba. The senior forward averaged 16.2 points and nine
rebounds per game. She wants to attend Houghton.
Wayne County
Brittany McCray, Lyons. The senior forward finished her career with 1,090
points, 957 rebounds, 255 steals and 182 steals. This past season she had a
double-double in 20 of 21 games while averaging 16.7 points and 14.9 rebounds.
Allegany County I
Erin Ostrander, Genesee Valley. The senior guard averaged 15.2 points, 10.1
rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.2 steals a game. She plans to attend Oswego State.
Allegany County II
Shannon Daugherty, Houghton. The senior guard averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds
and five assists a game. She is planning on attending either Houghton or
Messiah.
Steuben County
Hilary York, Canisteo-Greenwood. The senior guard averaged 10 points, 4
rebounds and 2.5 assists in leading C-G to an 18-4 record.
Note: Livingston County girls did not submit a player.
The winners are chosen by Section V receiving nominations from area coaches.
