01.28.08 - Downey drops 32 points as Fairport tops Edison

(January 28, 2008) — Kyle Downey did not sugarcoat his team's performance Sunday night against Edison.

"We lacked intensity and passion," Downey said. "We did not attack the hoop as much as we should have and we were just very lackadaisical. Edison did a great job and we were fortunate to be on the winning side."

The Fairport senior scored 23 of his 32 points in the second half to ignite the Red Raiders to a 62-48 victory against the Inventors in a non-league boys basketball game at the Blue Cross Arena.

"We definitely did not play Fairport basketball," coach Scott Fitch said. "Part of that was due to Edison because they really played well; the other part was that we just were not ready."

The Red Raiders led 27-23 at the half before Downey started getting hot. He scored seven of Fairport's first 10 points of the third quarter and finished the third with 13 points.

Downey gave the Red Raiders a 42-27 lead with a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left in the quarter. Downey then stole the inbound pass and converted it for a layup to give Fairport a 45-27 lead. The Red Raiders, ranked No. 3 in the Democrat and Chronicle large-schools coaches' poll, outscored the Inventors 18-4 in the quarter.

"We tried to get him the ball in a few more dangerous positions in the second half," Fitch said. "The other guys started looking at the basket more also and that opens it up for Kyle, too. It was nice to see everybody getting aggressive at the end."

Edison rallied in the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 54-45 midway through the fourth quarter on back-to-back 3-pointers by J'Quay Veniszee. Downey, who scored 10 points in the fourth, and Mike Glenn each hit 3-pointers down the stretch to pad the Fairport lead.

"Our energy in the first half was not very good, but we definitely woke up in the second half," senior forward Sam Townsend said. "Edison was playing great defense and forcing turnovers in the first half, so it was crucial that we took care of the ball and executed our plays better in the second half."

Downey grabbed 13 rebounds and Marc Bertucci added 10 points and three blocks for Fairport (11-3). Townsend finished with 6 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals, and Zack Scribani had nine assists and six steals.

Terrence Daniels scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Veniszee and Antwon Maddox each scored 10 points for Edison (4-10).

The Red Raiders will play at Rush-Henrietta (11-3), ranked No. 2 in the Democrat and Chronicle large-schools coaches' poll, Wednesday night at 7:45.

"We have to improve in every aspect of the game if we want to compete with R-H," Fitch added. "We need to go back to the drawing board and make sure we are ready for Wednesday."

The Royal Comets defeated Fairport 67-47 in December.

"We need to play like we belong on the court with them, and I feel we do belong," Downey said. "They beat us by 20 (at Rush-Henrietta) and that's not something I'm good with."
