(February 15, 2008) — Pairings for the Section V boys basketball tournament
were announced today and five schools located in Monroe County earned top
seeds.
Two-time defending champion Fairport (16-4) is No. 1 in Class AAA,
while City-Catholic League power East High (19-1) is No. 1 in Class AA. The
Orientals usually play in the largest classification but due to enrollment
dropped down this winter. Two-time defending champion Greece Athena (19-1)
is the No. 2 seed in Class AA.
Charlotte (17-3), another city team, will try to defend its title in Class
BB as the top seed, while Bishop Kearney (14-5) in Class B and Harley
Allendale-Columbia (17-3) in Class C are also No. 1s.
Rounding out the top seeds are traditional small-school powers Batavia Notre
Dame (17-3) in Class DD and Prattsburgh (19-1) in Class D. The only two
remaining unbeaten boys basketball teams in Section V -- Newark (20-0) in
Class A and Avon (20-0) in Class CC -- are also top seeds.
Tournament play starts Tuesday and "Super Saturday," when six of the nine
championship games are played at Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial -- is
scheduled for March 1.
