Johnson propels R-H past Fairport

(March 3, 2008) — Shenise Johnson scored a season-high 34 points, including 16 straight for her team to start the fourth quarter, to power No. 2 seed Rush-Henrietta to a 62-59 win over No. 1 Fairport in the Section V Class AAA girls basketball championship game tonight.

A boisterous crowd at Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial saw R-H (20-3) win a fifth straight crown and Johnson, the senior forward and McDonald’s All-American, earn a fourth straight tournament MVP award. She added 20 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals and moved into ninth place Section V’s all-time scoring list with 2,100 points.

The Comets will face Greece Athena (14-9) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Victor in the Class AA state tournament qualifying game. R-H has beaten Athena the past three years in that matchup.

Junior forward LaDonya Rolle added 12 points for R-H. Sophomore forward Allyson DiMagno led Fairport (20-3) with 23 points and senior guard Brittany Wilson added 17.

The Red Raiders had beaten R-H twice during Monroe County Division I play this winter.
